Following a successful competition win, the project focuses on transforming one of the floors of the Western Bank Library in Sheffield into an engaging interactive gallery space. Situated between the iconic Arts Tower and Western Park, the proposal not only reimagines the existing space but also extends its connectivity to the courtyard while introducing sustainable features for the benefit of visitors and students alike.
The current space, primarily utilised for storage and administrative offices, features a spacious layout with exterior windows and structural columns interspersed throughout. The proposal capitalises on this open layout by creating distinct interior rooms, each offering unique atmospheres and functionalities.
Soft, curved rooms are delineated using curtains suspended from the existing ceiling structure, effectively dividing the space into exhibition areas and quiet study zones conducive to both individual and group work. Additionally, timber panels are integrated into the existing structure to form temporary, movable walls, facilitating the display of works and enhancing the adaptability of the space.
In line with our commitment to sustainability, we repurpose an unused pair of doors to establish a new connection to an outdoor terrace, seamlessly blending the indoor and outdoor environments. This revitalised outdoor space is complemented by a seating area constructed from cork blocks, providing students with a low-carbon workspace that fosters collaboration and connection with nature.
Our approach not only reimagines the functionality of the Western Bank Library floor but also prioritises user experience, sustainability, and community engagement. By creating dynamic, versatile spaces that encourage interaction and innovation, we aim to enrich the educational and cultural experience for library visitors and students alike.
